TIRED OF NFL PLAYERS PROTESTING THE ANTHEM? GOOD NEWS FROM THIS TEAM OWNER: STAND OR FACE THESE CONSEQUENCES
Doug Baldwin, Seattle Seahawks receiver, says free speech in the NFL is under threat. According to Baldwin, at least one team owner, possibly more, has told players that they must stand in line for the National Anthem, hand over heart, or else they may face consequences.
When 49er’s player Colin Kaepernick became national news for ‘opting out’ of the anthem, more and more professional athletes followed suit. Kaepernick sparked a trend of ‘taking a knee’ during the anthem in protest of perceived injustices towards minorities.
Baldwin appeared on ‘Any Given Wednesday with Bill Simmons’ and said NFL owners ‘have told their players to do specific things or to not do specific things’ regarding anthem protests.
“The one quote that I was informed of was, ‘You’re going to stand on the line with your hand on your heart and you’re going to sing the national anthem because this is my stage,” reported Baldwin.
Baldwin, who has taken part of these protests, is outraged. “What we’re trying to get you to see is that there’s something going on in society, and it’s growing, and it’s growing, and while you keep ignoring it you’re feeding it… it’s going to consume a lot of people,” he explains. “So, at some point in time… you’re going to have to listen to us at some point.”
Simmons suggested players who don’t like playing on another person’s stage take their game and form their own league. Baldwin agreed.
