A man found something in the dirt, and he knew exactly what it was. He started filming the exciting event and posted it to YouTube.

The YouTube user, aptly named Naturwunder, found a large, black pupa. Inside that black shell, a caterpillar was transforming into a beautiful hawk moth. Australian Naturwunder filmed the process and shared it with the world.

The metamorphosis of a caterpillar takes a few weeks. The videographer holds the pupa in his hand. The strong creature inside occasionally writhes and wriggles inside his cocoon.

After keeping and watching the pupa for about a week, the moth begins to emerge. Naturwunder was right there to film it. The moth’s front legs break out first and the creature struggles to pull himself out of the shell.

After he finally emerges, Naturwunder holds him up for a close-up. He then places him on a fence. “It’s vitally important that it is allowed to hang this way, in a safe place, for around 24 hours– otherwise the wings won’t unfurl properly and it won’t be able to fly,” the YouTuber explains in a caption on the video.

The next day, the moth’s huge wings are unfurled. He spent the day in the sunshine resting on the fence, then took off.
