A young man in South Africa suffered from a mysterious illness that made it impossible for him to move or communicate for over 12 years. His family thought he was in a coma, but he actually was suffering from ‘locked-in’ syndrome for most of that time, meaning he was aware of everything that was going on around him.

Martin Pistorius began to fall ill at the young age of 12. He slipped into a coma for about three years, and for the next three years slipped in and out of comas. By the time he was 19 years old, he was fully awake. The problem is, no one knew it.

Pistorius was completely unable to communicate that he was awake. He heard things like a fly on the wall might hear them. At one point, his devastated mother grieved over her son’s immobile body, saying he would be better off dead.

Though his mom regrets those words, Pistorius says he completely understands what she meant. She had no idea her son was trapped inside his own flesh until an aromatherapist noticed small, nearly imperceptible movements that no one else had noticed.

Once everyone realized Pistorius was awake, things changed quickly. With treatment and therapy, he resumed his ability to communicate using computers. He’s able to get around by a wheelchair now. He went to college, and even married.

He published ‘Ghost Boy’ to tell his story, hoping to inspire others with the power of faith and patience.
